I have vivid memories of eating these cookies at Grandma Lucy’s house.  She used to make them often.

Ingredients

Cookie

  • 4 cups Flour
  • 2 and 1/2 tsp Cocoa Powder
  • 2 and 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 6 oz Raisins
  • 6 and 1/2 oz Sugar
  • 6 and 1/2 oz Crisco
  • 1/4 tsp Cloves
  • 1 and 1/4 tsp Cinnamon

Icing

  • Powdered Sugar
  • Water

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1:

Place raisins in a small bowl, cover with water and soak for1 hour.

Step 2:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Step 3:

Put flour into a large pot; add cocoa, baking powder, sugar, shortening, clove and cinnamon powder.

Step 4:

Drain raisins, reserving water, and add to pot. Mix all the ingredients in the pot by hand, adding the reserved water, a little at a time while mixing the dough.

Step 5:

When the dough is mixed thoroughly, shape into ping -pong ball size balls and place on greased cookie sheets.

Step 6:

Bake at 350º for 45 minutes. Cool cookies and place in large bowl or pot.

Step 7:

Add sufficient water to the powdered sugar to make a fluid paste and add to cookies. Lightly toss cookies by hand to coat with icing. Remove cookies, spread out on a table and let dry.
