Tarales

By: Marie DePadova • In: Cookies • Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Presto Cake Mix (or other brand of self-rising flour)
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp Fennel Seeds
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 3/4 cup Canola Oil (or vegtable oil)
  • 1 cup Water (warm)

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Step 2:

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, fennel seeds and pepper, combining well.

Step 3:

Make a well in the center of the dried ingredients and add the oil, then add the water. Mix all ingredients well to produce soft dough.

Step 4:

Rolling pieces of dough between your palms create thin pencil shaped pieces. Then wind the piece around your index finger, pinch the ends together, and place the tarales on a non-stick cookie sheet.

Tip: Sometimes the dough will be very soft (depends on moisture in air, etc.) so don’t be concerned – just work with it as best you can, in other words you might not be able to roll in your palms, just shape into circles, opened in center just like a donut.

Step 5:

Bake for about ½ hour, turning once, until lightly browned on both sides. Cool on a wire rack.
