Ingredients
Cake Batter
- 1/2 cup Crisco
- 1 and 1/2 cups Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- 2 oz Red Food Coloring
- 1 tsp Cocoa Powder
- 2 and 1/2 cups Cake Flour
- 1 tsp Baking Soda
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 tsp White Vinegar
- 1 cup Buttermilk
Butter Cream Icing
- 1 cup Milk
- 2 tbsp Flour
- 1 stick Butter
- 1/2 cup Crisco
- 1 cup Powdered Sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Step 2:
To make the cake batter thoroughly cream sugar, shortening and eggs. Make paste of coloring and cocoa (will be liquid). Add to mixture.
Step 3:
Add flour with salt alternately with buttermilk.
Step 4:
Add vanilla. Last fold in baking soda and vinegar.
Step 5:
Bake in two greased, round 8″ pans at 350° for 30 minutes. Cool before cutting each in half to create 4 layers.
Step 6:
To make the icing mix flour and milk in a saucepan over low heat; cook until thick, then cool.
Step 7:
Cream sugar, shortening, butter, and vanilla with mixer for 10 minutes until light and fluffy.
Step 8:
Blend in cooled flour mixture.
Step 9:
Spread frosting on each half layer. Stack and frost over all.
