1 and 1/2 cups Sugar

1 tsp Cocoa Powder

2 and 1/2 cups Cake Flour

1 tsp Baking Soda

1 tsp Salt

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

1 tsp White Vinegar

1 cup Buttermilk

Butter Cream Icing

1 cup Milk

2 tbsp Flour

1 stick Butter

1/2 cup Crisco

1 cup Powdered Sugar

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. |

To make the cake batter thoroughly cream sugar, shortening and eggs. Make paste of coloring and cocoa (will be liquid). Add to mixture. |

Add flour with salt alternately with buttermilk. |

Add vanilla. Last fold in baking soda and vinegar. |

Bake in two greased, round 8" pans at 350° for 30 minutes. Cool before cutting each in half to create 4 layers. |

To make the icing mix flour and milk in a saucepan over low heat; cook until thick, then cool. |

Cream sugar, shortening, butter, and vanilla with mixer for 10 minutes until light and fluffy. |

Blend in cooled flour mixture. |

Spread frosting on each half layer. Stack and frost over all. |
